You get clarity from action

As I sit with this blank page in front of me, unsure how to start or what to start writing about, I think of all the times I have felt this uncertainty about what to do next.

Resistance to something I actually want to do and know would be beneficial to me.

Which route to take, what to do first, and where to start?

Maybe I’ll go make myself a coffee instead or wipe the counter? Fold that one piece of clothing lying around on the couch.

When it comes to *starting*, whatever it is you want to start- exercise, writing, cooking, organizing your closet… do yourself a favor, and instead of spiraling into procrastination and self-judgment, just take the first step.

It doesn’t even need to be a full step, it can be a half a step. Anything that moves the needle for you in the right direction.

Because you get clarity from action.

It feels like things start flowing in the right direction and the next step is easier to make.

Here are a few things to help deal with resistance and self-doubt.

  • Become aware of it happening

When you are about to start the task, you suddenly feel like putting it off by doing something else.

Catch yourself when this feeling arises. Sit with it for a little bit. Don’t give in to the distraction right away.

  • Never judge yourself, and don’t turn this feeling into something bad

You know the feeling of putting off important tasks that would benefit you.

That may bring disappointment, judging yourself for lacking discipline and focus.

Remind yourself- that is not true. It is just an obstacle that you can overcome with the right mindset.

  • Let it simmer

You start, but it’s going nowhere? Let the ideas simmer.

Sometimes going for a walk, or simply taking a deep breath outside, allows you to clear your head.

It feels like a cloud has taken over you and the constant loop of feeling blocked has no end. Taking yourself out of that might be what you need for things to flow.

We all deal with feelings of uncertainty, fear, and doubt.

Give yourself some grace. Moving slowly in the right direction is what matters. Become aware of your own resistance, coexist with it, and let it be a teacher.

As “appetite comes with eating”, creativity, and inspiration come the deeper you dive into whatever it is you are doing.
